PRESENTATION

Software teams have been working geographically dispersed since industry decided to explore the distribution of software development processes and resources as a mean to reduce cost and development time, and also to expand to new markets. Over the years, literature has shown that geographical distance has a significant impact on the coordination and communication processes among members of dispersed development teams. Moreover, that the performance of such teams can be affected. Despite the challenges faced by these teams, Distributed Software Development (DSD) has become a reality that developers have to deal with everyday.

DSD is a common practice in the national and international markets. In Brazil, we find companies located in different regions that jointly develop software projects. Besides that, several multinational organizations have been developing software projects in Brazil. In order to deal with distribution issues, several technological, organizational and social approaches and solutions have been proposed. The study of such proposals is aligned with Brazilian government programs that aim to increase the quality of software processes, and products and services, helping the national software industry to become more competitive in the global context.

Following the worldwide trend to promote specific scientific forums to discuss DSD, once again the Brazilian community is organizing the Brazilian Workshop on Distributed Software Development (WDDS). WDDS constitutes a forum for Brazilian researchers and industry practitioners to present and to discuss the results of their research and experiences in the field. This yearÕs edition celebrates the 15th anniversary of the first publication in DSD in Brazil. Therefore, we invite the Brazilian community to revisit its contribution and to discuss future directions. This special edition is proudly celebrated in conjunction with the 7th IEEE International Conference on Global Software Development (ICGSE), one of the main worldwide forums of discussion about DSD.

Authors are invited to submit papers describing lessons learned, retrospective, or prospective critical views of the research in the country. Submissions about the impact of the Brazilian research in DSD in the country and/or worldwide as well as about which are the key success factors and/or difficulties to conduct such research are also welcome. We seek to promote discussion of the following (but not limited) topics:

- A broader assessment of the state of the art of Brazilian research in DSD;
- A retrospective of 15 years of specific research topics in DSD in Brazil;
- Identification of challenges to the practice of DSD in Brazil;
- A review of industry-university collaboration in Brazil;
- DSD industrial prospects in Brazil;
- Identifying gaps and directions for Brazilian research in DSD.

RELEVANCE OF THE WORKSHOP

The year 2012 is a special year. It celebrates the 15th anniversary of the first publication about DSD in Brazil. The paper entitled ÒSoftware Process Development for Cooperative and Distributed Software TeamsÓ (original in Portuguese entitled ÒProcesso de Desenvolvimento de Software para Equipes de Trabalho Cooperativas e Distribu’dasÓ, published in 1997, presented a process based on the SW-CMM model to support distributed software development teams. This is also the year that ICGSE returns to Brazil after its first memorable first edition in the Cost‹o do Santinho Resort, in Florian—polis, in 2006. This year ICGSE will take place in Porto Alegre. Therefore, there is an excellent opportunity to promote a healthy environment for the debate of ideas about DSD research in Brazil among Brazilian researchers and practitioners.

In this context, this special edition of the Brazilian Workshop on Distributed Software Development aims to bring together two main activities. First, presentations of papers discussing critical views of the past, present and future of Brazilian research in DSD. Second, a special working meeting session to discuss the future of the research field in the country. This working meeting session aims more specifically to promote discussion among members of the Brazilian DSD community about how to establish strategies to consolidate the use of DSD in companies located in Brazil as well as to define cooperative research projects involving researchers and practitioners from several regions. We believe that this yearÕs WDDS edition will set an important milestone for researchers, practitioners, and educators to understand the latest innovations, trends, experiences, and concerns involving the Brazilian research in DSD.

WORKSHOP STRUCTURE

Differently from the previous years, this one-day workshop will be composed of the two following activities:

1) Paper Presentation Session: A short paper presentation section will give authors of previously selected papers the opportunity to present ideas related with topics suggested above. Presented papers will be archived as part of the IEEE ICGSE workshop proceedings and stored and indexed by the IEEEXplore Digital Database. Authors of selected papers are invited to bring a poster to present their work in the main ICGSE conference.

2) Working Meeting Session: Authors of the presented papers at the special edition of WDDS and from past editions and the overall Brazilian DSD community (researchers, professors, PhD students and Master students) will be invited to discuss together about the challenges, key success factors, lessons learned and the future of DSD aiming to make more effective the DSD practice in Brazil. We expect this exercise will further collaborations between industry and academia, and that this will lead to more effective research projects and successful in practice.

Note: We aim to have the paper presentation session in the morning and the working meeting session in the afternoon. This schedule might change according to the number of papers selected and the number of people enrolled to participate in the workshop.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

We will accept short papers submissions and camera-read versions through EasyChair. Submitted papers must be unpublished original work.

Short papers: 3-6 pages papers should discuss one of the suggested topics. Submissions and final papers should be formatted using the IEEE CS format.

Papers should been written in English. Each paper submitted will be reviewed by at least three members of the Program Committee based on their relevance for the special edition of WDDS and the clarity of presentation. The authors of accepted submissions will be invited to present their work in the workshop. For accepted submissions, at least one of the authors must register in the workshop.

For clarification requests, contact the Program Committee Chairs at emhuzita@din.uem.br or sabrina.marczak@pucrs.br

PUBLICATION

All accepted papers will be published in the ICGSE 2012 conference proceedings.
